Formatting of boxes

SOLVED

Something seems to be happening with the formatting. I'm aligning the boxes in design mode:

But then the formatting looks terrible in preview or when the students complete them:

Am I doing something wrong? Some of these are worksheets I've used in the past though, and they were fine then.
