III. Read and answer:

A poncho is an outer garment designed to keep the body warm. It's a sleeveless garment with unsewn sides and a space for the head to pass through. Has its origins in South America along the Andes Mountains.

The poncho is also a very important cultural icon for some indigenous people in South America. The designs and colors of a poncho can signify the position of power that a person occupies in a community. For example, in the Mapuche indigenous culture, wearing a poncho with diamonds symbolizes the wisdom of man. So it is only used by men of a certain age or important position in the community.

Today the poncho has two important uses: (1) to protect yourself from bad weather and (2) as decorative clothing in autumn or winter.

The ponchos are handmade with brightly colored threads and very creative designs. The artisans who are dedicated to creating them are mostly women and are called "las teleras". The poncho is used in many of the Hispanic cultures in America and Spain. It is a symbol of beauty and protection against the weather.
