LOGging In

Time for some extra practice.

Let's start by labeling the key parts of our logarithms and exponents.

Look at the number below. Is the 3 an exponent or a base number?

Ok. How about this example? Which number is the base number?

One more time! What is the exponent and what is the base?

Base

Exponent

Now that you understand the difference between the base number and exponent, we can now apply this to logarithms. Take this base and exponent for example.

- The base (2) will be represented as a subscript next to the log.
- The base and exponent equal to (8), will be in the parenthesis of the logarithm.
- Lastly, the exponent (3) will be the solution to the logarithm.

Type YES in the empty box if you understand

Try it yourself! What goes in the blank?

Reverse it! Can you find the exponent and base when given the logarithm?
