Agriculture

Agriculture is one of the most important industries in the world, but how is it keeping up with a rapidly changing society? There are around 7.3 billion people in the world today, with the population expected to grow to another billion by 2030. As a vital part of every country, agriculture must try to keep up with the ever-increasing demand for produce. Farmers have seen a dramatic change in the way they work, due to advancements in technology and equipment. Many years ago, when farming was a largely manual occupation, farmers were able to feed around 19 people per day. Nowadays, a farmer can feed around 155 people a day. This is because of the development of motorized equipment such as tractors, improved housing for the animals and more time-and-cost efficient machines. One such example is a milking machine, which takes a lot less labour to produce the same volume of milk. However, two things remain the same about agriculture today as they did many years ago; farmers are still often family-run and farmers still have to wake up before dawn to feed and herd the animals. As competition grows from more commercial farms, any local farmers have begun specializing in what they produce and the type of farming they do. some have chosen to focus on dairy farming, producing milk for national supermarket chains, whilst others specialize in certain types of crops such as wheat or barley.
